LEEDs Certified Green Home in Griffin Park

12/09/2008

Greenville SC (October 30, 2008) - The developers of Griffin Park announce that Authentic Custom Homes has begun construction on a LEEDs Green Home, striving for the platinum level. This is the highest level possible in Green building. This single family residential home will be one of the first LEEDs certified homes in the state of South Carolina. The home will be located on 32 Hatcher Creek Street in Griffin Park, located approximately 5 miles off the West Georgia exit at 1-385. “The vision of Griffin Park is all about green growth and smart growth. The LEEDs home being built by Authentic Custom Homes will be a welcome addition to Griffin Park. Hopefully, This home will encourage others in Griffin Park and the Upstate to build homes that are environmentally sensitive,” said Joe Jelks, managing member of Jelks/Little LLC, developer of Griffin Park. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is a third party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. More and more people are considering green homes because they use less energy, water and natural resources; create less waste; and are healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. Benefits of a LEED home also include lower energy and water bills; reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. The net cost of owning a LEED home is comparable to that of owning a conventional home. “We have been building homes with earth friendly responsibility in mind.” said Buddy Delozier, President of Authentic Custom Homes. “With over 25 years of experience as a custom home builder, our goal is to take green building to the next level in our everyday building practice with sustainability and energy efficiency topping our priority list. Building energy efficient and sustainable homes will help with future maintenance of your home and also reduce your carbon footprint on our earth. For us, building LEED’s certified was the only way to go.” Designed by Allison Ramsey Architects, the home is called The Poet’s Cottage. When complete, the home will be a 2,110 square foot residence certified by the US Green Building Council. The home will feature three bedrooms, two and a half baths, covered porch and outdoor living area, plus a bonus room with full bath. The stringent criteria for LEEDs certification will include: • Energy-star rating and certification • Tankless water heater • HVAC system with duel fuel and air cleaners • Cellulose insulation with vent free attic • Synthetic sheet rock with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints, reducing the toxins that are emitted into the air. • Sealed Monolithic slab construction which is both structurally and naturally insulated and reduces mildew growth • Reclaimed flooring or rapidly renewable wood flooring such as bamboo • Pervious driveway for water drainage, which allows rainwater to seep into earth or naturally flow into storm water system • Extensive recycling during construction process to reduce volume of material going to landfill • Educating the General Public and the Construction Workforce With a desire to lessen their urban footprint and limit gas emissions, many people are looking at ways to build smaller homes and reduce dependence on cars. According to a recent poll conducted by CNN/Opinion Research, 66% of those surveyed said they are cutting back on the amount of driving they do to cope with higher gas prices. Griffin Park offers a network of trails, streets and alleys suitable for pedestrians as well as vehicles. This provides residents the option of walking or biking in lieu of driving to places within the community.
